Queen of Sustainability a NAWIC finalist

Some of you may have heard about WI’s Queen of Sustainability … others may know her as the Environmental and Sustainability Manager on the Sunbury Road Upgrade, and to others, the name Julie Buckley may ring a bell.

This week, Julie can add another accolade to her name, as a Finalist Nominee in the 2023 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Victoria Awards.

This Friday night in Melbourne, the NAWIC Awards will recognise the successes of women working in the construction industry.

The ceremony publicly acknowledges these successes and the hard work and energy of all nominees and Award winners.

Julie has been nominated for the ‘Sustainability Award’, which recognises excellence and achievements in sustainable practices in the construction industry.

Julie has worked as a Health and Safety, Environmental and Sustainability representative for 30 years in the heavy, commercial, and civil construction industries.

Seven years ago, Julie joined Winslow Infrastructure as an Environmental Sustainability Advisor, and through demonstrating continuous learning and dedication was promoted to Environmental and Sustainability Manager for various major roads projects.

Throughout Julie’s career, she has been driven by a passion for innovation and excellence for herself, and those around her.

She has dedicated herself to ensuring the health and safety of the community and teams on site, while championing environmental and sustainability excellence throughout WI.

Julie led a Victorian State First initiative, through the implementation of the SoilFlo soil management tracking system and led the construction and implementation of sustainable site facilities on WI sites.

Through the implementation of her initiatives, the Sunbury Road Upgrade Project has seen a reduction in the volume of waste in landfill, a reduction of truck movements and long-term triple bottom line impacts and savings.

From an environmental perspective, there has been a massive reduction in site-based impacts by using Hybrid Solar Generators, LED and sensor lighting, and rainwater tanks installation.

Julie has always shared knowledge and experience openly and engaged with colleagues and contractors, to offer guidance and mentorship where she can, and to enable others to grow and develop in their careers.
