Family steers Sal to career as an engineer

Like many students, Winslow Constructors KPI Engineer Saleem Gharib wasn’t sure what he wanted to do after completing Year 12 at St. Monica’s College in Epping.

However, having engineers in the family helped steer him to a career in civil construction.

“Most of my uncles are engineers, and they helped me make the decision to become an engineer,” Saleem said.

“After talking to them about what was involved, I decided to study Civil Engineering at RMIT, which I graduated with my diploma in 2021.

“They supported me along the way when I needed help during my studies, and they helped me gain invaluable experience by working with them and developing my knowledge in the field.”

Saleem applied for a Graduate Engineer position via the Winslow’s website that also highlighted its Graduate Program, which he said “really appealed” to him.

A friend, who was a Site Engineer at Winslow, helped him secure an interview and he was soon offered the job. After 12 months he was promoted to a KPI Engineer.

“For six months I’ve been working as a KPI Engineer, and I continue to learn something new all the time, which inspires me,” he said.

“There’s so many career opportunities here because Winslow identifies leaders early who are offered a place in the Emerging Leaders program.”

Saleem said most civil engineer graduates do not have the on-site experience that graduates working at Winslow receive.

It is why Winslow has achieved a Prosple ranking of Number 1 in the Construction and Property sector and 10th Overall in the Top 100 Graduate Employers for 2025.

“I worked in the field when I began here so that I had a full understanding of all the construction processes,” he said.

“When I moved into the office, my role was so much clearer as I understood it better than someone who hasn’t gotten their hands dirty.

“Nothing beats hands-on experience to learn fast, and my supervisors were always willing to answer any questions and guide me.

“The team here is always available and willing to help me, which is extremely comforting especially when you first start in a new role.”
