Carlo’s switch from chiro to surveyor

When Survey Management Solutions (SMS) Area Manager Carlo Noble left secondary school he wanted a career in the medical field.

“I was studying a double degree in chiropractic and health science, followed by physiotherapy, nursing and paramedicine,” he said.

However, like many others he decided this wasn’t the career path he envisaged so he instead pivoted for a career in civil construction.

“I soon realised that medicine and health practises did not hold my interest anymore,” Carlo said.

“Being hands-on and analytical, I thought construction would be the best course of action.”

Carlo instead switched his studies to a Diploma of Surveying, and “just two weeks later” he applied for a job at SMS to also learn from hands-on experience.

“SMS gave me the opportunity to study and work as a part-time surveyor, which at the time was rare for the business,” he said.

“Because I was successful at working and studying, SMS decided to hire more students.”

Carlo’s career pathway highlights the opportunities available at SMS.

He completed his advanced diploma in 2019 and began working at SMS full-time as a Graduate Surveyor.

Carlo was soon promoted to the role of Surveyor, then again to Senior Surveyor which saw him recognised for his leadership qualities.

“Now I am the Area Manager for the South West Region, the region where I started as a part-time surveyor,” he said.

“My team comes from varying professional backgrounds. I give everyone an equal opportunity to develop themselves, with myself and SMS.

“Seeing my team develop is the most rewarding outcome for me, because their growing independence and knowledge of construction practices is what I’m here for.

“I love having my field staff call me with a survey/construction query, but I prefer giving them all the opportunity to figure out solutions independently. It makes me proud to know that they have the capability to find solutions to problems themselves”.
