More exercise makes you happy
Regular aerobic exercise, such as running, can reduce the risk of developing major depression by up to 26 per cent.
Exercise is also an effective treatment for people already living with depression or anxiety and can also help improve overall mood, energy levels, and sleep quality.
As part of Mental Health Month, we are encouraging everyone to ‘Go The Extra K’ challenge where entrants run or walk 9000 (9K) steps per day for 30 days for the nine Australians we lose through suicide every day.
Taking 9000 steps are roughly equivalent to 7.2km, which is a good amount of walking for health benefits, with some studies suggesting it’s close to the optimal number of steps to reduce mortality risk.
To commit to going the ‘Extra K’, you can sign up to Run for Mental Health to participate and fundraise for Mental Health Ltd to raise funds for mental health research, education and services, while achieving your 9000 steps each day.
Whether you aim for 9000 steps, or just go for a short walk, exercise is a powerful tool for managing mental health, and the good news is that even a small amount of regular exercise can make a difference.
