Queensland’s green machine
Winslow Queensland’s Environmental team has been achieving great results lately to deliver successful environmental outcomes on key projects.
Environmental Advisor Claire Galbraith and Environmental Coordinator Heather Harris-MacLeod have been leading the way on major infrastructure projects and in the urban space.
The pair work closely together, guiding Winslow’s site teams on practical environmental management, ensuring positive outcomes and compliance on technical Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) projects and across the wider Queensland and Northern NSW business.
Claire and Heather have led environmental compliance on key Infrastructure project, including:
- Samford Road Upgrade
- Ferny Way Intersection Upgrade
- Willawong Waste Facility Remediation
- Caboolture Landfill High Efficiency Sediment Basin
- Coomera Connecter Stage 1 Earthworks
- Glasshouse Mountains – Caloundra Road – Intersection Upgrade
“There are always different environmental issues to navigate on infrastructure projects,” Claire said.
“Particularly when we are relatively new to the infrastructure space in Queensland where projects and clients have higher expectations and requirements in regard to environmental performance than are generally seen in the urban space.”
The Coomera Connector project has been the Winslow Queensland’s biggest infrastructure job to date and has also been the most environmentally complex.
The site is in a heavily vegetated area with acid sulphate soils (ASS) throughout the project, and is surrounded on two sides by Nerang River, Queensland Rail and a train station on a third side.
The team also had Federal and State environmental approvals to comply with.
In early March, the team had to assist with preparation of sites for Cyclone Alfred which brought severe weather to Southeast Queensland and Northern NSW.
“This required a considerable effort across all projects to ensure all erosion and sediment controls were constructed to minimise the expected impact from the severe weather,” Heather said.
“In the lead up to the cyclone hitting, we attended all sites to work with construction teams to assist with the controls needed, which were actively implemented across all sites and successfully minimised damage.”
Both Claire and Heather said Winslow Environmental and Sustainability Manager Hugo Dickinson acts as a mentor who has consistently provided knowledge, backup, and guidance.
