Maddison named Apprentice of the Year
Congratulations to Winslow Infrastructure’s (WI) Maddison McCallum for winning the Apprentice of the Year Award (female) category at the Civil Contractor’s Federation (CCF) People & Training Awards last month.
In front of a packed room at Melbourne’ Grand Hyatt, Maddison’s name was again up in lights, as she took home the award in a tough category, being shortlisted as one of six.
The CCF’s Apprentice of the Year Award in civil construction honours outstanding apprentices who demonstrate exceptional skills and theoretical knowledge. Winners exhibit versatility, innovation, and a commitment to excellence.
Maddison’s construction career was sparked by her father Mick’s dedication and service to the industry and inspired by his career, Maddison embarked on her own journey by beginning an apprenticeship at Winslow Infrastructure.
“I am so excited to have been recognised with the honour of winning this award. To stand up in that room on Friday night and accept the award in front of so many others in our industry was such an exciting career milestone for me,” Maddison said.
“I want to inspire young women looking to pursue careers in a trade, showing that they too can excel in this traditionally male-dominated field. I hope that by winning these awards as a Young Apprentice, I am setting the example of what could be possible for other women when they work hard and find something they love to do.”
WI General Manager, Leonard Bam, was thrilled for Maddison on her win.
“This is Maddison’s second industry award within the space of six months – she should be so proud of herself,” Leonard said.
“Maddison is a wonderful example of where hard work, dedication and commitment can get you.
“She has exemplified creative and unique solutions to on-site issues, already becoming a ‘go-to’ for fellow team members in resolving robust and tricky challenges. Her ability to think outside the box is commended and she is such a valued member of our WI team. Congratulations.”
After winning the 2024 National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) Victoria Young Apprentice of the Year Award, Winslow Infrastructure’s (WI) Maddison McCallum was also nominated for the National President’s Choice Award.
Each state NAWIC President had the honour of selecting one standout individual from their respective awards to be entered into the prestigious President’s Choice Award category, and the Victorian President chose Maddison.
Madison was joined by her parents, partner and representatives from WI (pictured above) in Sydney for the national event where she was acknowledged on the night for her exceptional work and commitment to the industry.
“I was so excited to have been nominated for this award and be amongst the other 7 female nominees. I was especially excited to be the only one from Melbourne,” Maddison said.
“Even though I didn’t bring home the national award this time, just standing up on Friday night in Sydney and being acknowledged in front of a room full of incredible, talented women, was such a career highlight and I am so proud of myself.
“I want to inspire young women looking to pursue careers in a trade, showing that they too can excel in this traditionally male-dominated field. I know I am only young, but I want to set an example of what could be possible for other women when they work hard and find something they love to do.”
The event also commemorated 30 years of NAWIC in Australia. Founded in 1995, it has grown to become the peak body for women and those who support women in the construction industry across Australia.
