Raj’s Way: Leading with Learning at Winslow

Raj Mahato, Medium Density and Retirement Living Manager at Winslow Constructors, exemplifies this commitment through his involvement in La Trobe University’s Career Ready Industry Mentoring Program.

The 12-week initiative builds valuable bridges between university students and industry professionals. For Raj, it offered an opportunity to give back in a deeply personal way. Having arrived in Australia in 2003 as a skilled migrant, Raj understands firsthand the barriers new professionals can face when entering the workforce.

“I didn’t get that help when I arrived,” Raj shared. “Now, I share what worked – and what didn’t.”

Through mentorship, Raj helps emerging professionals – like postgraduate architecture student Tshering, gain critical insights into Australia’s construction industry and workplace expectations. But the most powerful impact went beyond technical skills.

“Raj said I had strong communication skills. I didn’t think that was true,” Tshering recalled. “But hearing it gave me a huge confidence boost. It made me realise how communication can become one of my greatest strengths.”

Raj’s support helped Tshering overcome uncertainty, build self-belief, and embrace the learning journey. “This program helped me step out of my comfort zone. It’s shaped how I see myself, my goals, and the opportunities ahead.”
