Leading Hand studying to be a future leader
Engineering undergraduate Lucas Alderman has taken every opportunity available at Winslow to map out his career in civil construction to be well on his way to achieving his “ultimate goal” of becoming a Project Manager.
“Winslow is a great place to start your career, the opportunities here are massive,” the Leading Hand said.
“The business has many different moving parts that are required to deliver the final product.
“With jobs out in the field, in an office or in a workshop there are many opportunities to find something that piques your interest for a career path.”
Lucas is studying a Bachelor of Science (Majoring in Civil Engineering Systems) degree that he studies at La Trobe University.
“I attend university during semester, so I am only able to work a couple of days a week,” Lucas said.
“Winslow has been very accommodating by providing flexible working conditions so I can meet my obligations at university.
“Winslow does a great job of putting their employees first.”
Lucas, a Leading Hand working in Melbourne’s north, said his current role focuses on hands-on learning about the construction process from bulk earthworks through to the maintenance period.
This includes both labouring and engineering jobs from laying drainage to collecting KPIs.
“Winslow wants their employees to learn and progress within the organisation,” Lucas said.
“All the foremen, site engineers and project engineers that I work with have been extremely helpful. No question goes unanswered and every task is an opportunity to learn something new.
“Winslow’s graduate engineering program is an amazing opportunity to not only learn the ins and outs of our future roles as engineers, but also to meet people in similar positions and form relationships with future colleagues.”
He said every session focuses on a different aspect of the business, and leaders within the organisation attend to share their experiences.
“I’m also a part of Winslow’s Leadership Program, which focuses on learning about what good leadership looks like and how a job is best run,” he said.
“I am still a student but I keep reminding myself at the moment that all the work I’m doing now is going to pay off and it helps to have something to work towards.”
