Mock trial teaches Queensland team a safety lesson

Winslow Queensland held a mock workplace incident trial recently at the University of Queensland for our onsite leaders to highlight the serious legal consequences the business and leaders would face if Winslow was ever to be litigated over an incident on site resulting in injury or death.

This helped attendees, ranging from Leading Hands to Senior Project Managers, to understanding their duty of care to our highly valued workers on our sites, keeping in line with Winslow’s ‘My Family My Safety’ mantra. 

The case involved a fatal electrical-service strike where a subcontractor’s excavator was conducting preparatory earthworks for a new level crossing and the ramifications for the business and leaders involved.

“It was truly an insightful and engaging session. The lawyers were outstanding — witty, informative, and ruthless on the stand,” Senior Project Manager Kieran Hoy said.

“They kept the discussion relevant by incorporating real-life examples tailored to our industry and line of work.

“Our first witness – the operator – crumbled under the lawyers’ pressure, making the prosecution’s job effortless.

“One of our foremen took on the role of the Supervisor and attempted to push back, but the lawyers quickly put him in his place with relentless questioning.

“I thought I was well-prepared after reviewing the material multiple times, but the prosecution lawyers were too sharp, leaving me without answers to some of their questions.”

Kieran said everyone who attended gained a deeper understanding of the importance of adhering to our safety systems and became more aware of the legal implications when incidents occur.

“I highly recommend this training to anyone in a leadership role within our company,” he said.
