Maddison takes home NAWIC apprentice award

Winslow Infrastructure (WI) was again up in lights at the 2024 NAWIC Victoria Awards for Excellence last Friday at the Crown Palladium in Melbourne.

WI celebrated the nomination of two employees for awards – HR Manager Larissa Farnan, and Apprentice Maddison McCallum.

In a well-earned win, Maddison took home the NAWIC Tradesperson or Apprentice Award.

Inspired by her father’s dedication to construction, Maddison began her career with an apprenticeship at WI.

She worked on the 215 Princes Highway, Beaconsfield project, developing her critical thinking skills under the guidance of her supervisor, Mathew Youle.

Maddison’s hard work and proactive approach impressed Mathew, who described her as an exceptional worker.

“I nominated Maddison for this award because she is an exceptional member of our team – she is a brilliant problem solver and I have been so impressed with her work,” Mathew said.

Maddison is completing her Certificate III in Construction at National Skills Institute and plans to do Spotters training and gain more experience operating plant machinery.

Her innovative problem-solving skills were highlighted when she built a Centre Median from scratch for the Beaconsfield Project, often surpassing the solutions of her fellow engineering peers.

Maddison’s goal is to finish her apprenticeship and become a Supervisor. “I was so proud to represent WI at the awards last week and overjoyed to take home the award at the end of the night,” Maddison said.

Larissa was nominated for the Businesswoman Award due to her significant contributions to the construction industry and her efforts to promote gender diversity.

She has also developed two key tender components that have set a new standard for social responsibility in the industry.

As a member of MRPV’s Gender Equity working group and a guest speaker at industry forums, she actively challenges stereotypes and breaks down barriers for women in construction.

WI was also a proud Bronze Sponsor of the NAWIC Awards.
