Luke’s story supports Beyond Blue
In April, Winslow asked employees to nominate a charity that was close to their hearts and that had made a difference to their lives to be the recipient of a $20,000 donation.
Thank you to everyone who shared their heartfelt stories and nominations.
After careful consideration, Winslow, via the Allenby Foundation, will donate $20,000 to Beyond Blue, which was nominated by Winslow Constructors Foreman Luke Humphrey .
Luke’s story was a very personal one, having overcome serious mental health issues. Fortunately, Luke made the tough decision and sought help.
Luke’s is happy to share his story and hopes it will encourage others who may be struggling to speak up.
An extract from Luke’s story is below.
“I’d knock off work and lock myself away and lay in silence. It took two years before I finally broke. I felt weak and worthless. No man wants to be seen in tears.
I didn’t seek help for six months trying to fight my depression, until I spoke to my wife, family and friends, who then helped me get to the doctor.
It wasn’t easy. I struggled to get out of the car to walk into doctor’s appointments. It’s never easy to open up to anyone, but I did.
It was the start of me getting better”.
Luke recognises the amazing work that Beyond Blue provides to people experiencing mental health issues.

“We all know mental illness is a serious problem in the construction industry,” said Winslow Group Operations Manager Stephen Strano.
“We are so grateful to Luke for sharing his story. When we read Luke’s story, we were so moved and amazed by his courage in speaking up. We know this couldn’t be an easy story for him to share, but he has done it to help his Winslow family and the community.”
