Recycling caps off art installation

Westmeadows Primary School recently called for donations of bottle top caps, to kick off their vision of creating an amazing art installation for their outdoor seating area.

Winslow Infrastructure’s Sunbury Road Upgrade (SRU) Project Utilities Manager, Jerrod Kelly, started the hunt for his daughter, a student at the school, by collecting hundreds of bottle caps from the SRU site.  

“I love being engaged with what my children are doing and working on at school,” Jerrod said.

More than 4000 tops were collected by the students from foundation to Grade 6 and were used to create a vibrant art piece, proudly welcoming students, families, teachers and visitors to the school.

“During art classes, students were asked to pick a coloured bottle cap and place it onto the matching colour background, very much like ‘paint by numbers’,” Westmeadows Primary School art teacher, Miss D’Arne said.

“The children really enjoyed this process and I found them knocking at my door during lunch time and recess wanting to come in and help a little more.”

‘Wominjeka’ which means ‘To come with purpose’ or more commonly ‘Welcome’ in the Woiwurrung language of the Wurundjeri, is featured prominently and was chosen to celebrate the rich Indigenous history of the school.

The vibrant piece is now proudly on display and can’t be missed by visitors as they enter the school grounds.

The Winslow Infrastructure team is always looking for innovative ways to support the community, and this initiative is a great example of our team helping our future generations with a community project and introducing a fun and easy recycling concept.
