From South Africa to SMS

As part of Women in Construction Week, we meet some of Winslow Group’s women thriving in the civil construction industry. Today we meet SMS Survey Manager Merylene Naidoo.

Survey Manager Merylene Naidoo joined SMS a year ago after moving to Australia from South Africa where she had worked as a surveyor for 10 years.

Like many in the construction industry, it was a desire to work outdoors that drew her to her career in surveying.

“I have always been drawn to the idea of working outdoors and being able to see the results of my efforts,” Merylene said.

“I find satisfaction in knowing that my work will have a lasting impact on the community.”

She now manages the survey requirements for all Winslow Medium Density projects across all regions and is currently working on a multi-stage retirement village in Craigieburn.

Merylene’s career aspirations are to eventually advance to a senior managerial role taking on complex and higher profile projects and to leading a team of dynamic surveyors.

“I highly recommend women entering a career civil construction. As a woman in this field, I have found it to be incredibly rewarding and fulfilling,” she said.

“There are so many opportunities for growth and advancement, and the work is always challenging and exciting.

“I’ve had a positive experience working with my male colleagues. Building strong, collaborative relationships has been key.”

Merylene is grateful for the connections at SMS that have supported and mentored her.

“During my time at Winslow, I have had the privilege of being mentored and supported by exemplary professionals who have played instrumental roles in my career development,” Merylene said.

“I would like to acknowledge the invaluable guidance and support provided by my former manager Dean Ramsay; Survey Area Manager Alex Ahmed; and Trafman Solutions Operations Manager Danielle Bain.

“Their mentorship has been integral to my professional growth and has significantly contributed to my journey within the construction industry.”
